Quartet envoy Tony Blair, US officials disagree on how to deal with Syria as Pres. Assad gains on increasingly fragmented opposition forces. Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, currently serving as Middle East envoy to the Quartet – comprised of the United Nations, European Union, Russia and the United States – has called for international intervention in Syria.
Blair made the appeal Monday in an interview on BBC Radio 4's Today program, following a vicious onslaught by loyalist forces defending Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad against rebel fighters in the city of Homs, about 88 miles north of Damascus.
The Quartet on the Middle East or Middle East Quartet, sometimes called the Diplomatic Quartet or Madrid Quartet or simply the Quartet, is a foursome of nations and international and supranational entities involved in mediating the peace process in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Quartet are the United Nations, the United States, the European Union, and Russia.
